Let’s begin

Back to Our Roots: The Beginning of the U.P. Project

They say Buy Dirt, so standing here on this soil, surrounded by the same white-bark birch trees and the smell of the Upper Peninsula air, so we did.

We are officially the owners of my grandparents' land.

For years, this place was the backdrop of our lives—the destination for summer vacation and the place where our best childhood memories were made. We never lived here, but the U.P. has always lived in us. Now, the keys are in our hands, and the weight of that responsibility is both beautiful and, if we’re being honest, a little bit terrifying.

The Reality of the "Dream"

We’ve spent the last few months in a whirlwind of emotions. While we are overjoyed to keep this land in the family, we are also incredibly unprepared for the mountain of work ahead of us. The years haven't been kind to the structures here; there is so much to be done to make this place livable again.

The biggest challenge? We don't live here yet.

Currently, we are residents of another state, which means our "journey" will be measured in long flights and a few precious visits per year. Our retirement is the finish line, but until then, we are weekend warriors with a 1927 legacy to uphold.

Hand Tools and Heritage

If there is one thing we have on our side, it’s that we aren’t afraid to get our hands dirty. We are DIYers at heart, and we know that every shingle replaced and every weed pulled is a tribute to the people who stood here before us.

Our plan is ambitious. We aren’t just looking to patch things up; we are looking to build a future. The ultimate vision is a new home designed for our family to gather for generations to come. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, and we know there will be plenty of mistakes and learning curves along the way.

Join Us on the Journey

We decided to start this blog to document every step—the small wins, the major setbacks, and the quiet moments in between the birch trees. Whether you are a fellow Yooper, a DIY enthusiast, or someone who just loves a good "homestead" story, we are so glad you’re here.

We’re going back to our roots. It’s going to be a long road, but we can’t wait to see where it leads.

What’s your favorite U.P. memory? Or have you ever taken on a project that felt bigger than you? Let us know in the comments—we’re going to need all the encouragement we can get!
